Prevalent styleRenaissance
Short descriptionIn 1268 Přemysl Otakar II. had a stone keep built here as a foot-hold to the governor's power. This keep was renewed in Gothic style when kept by the Sternebrk's clan. Conquered and captured during Hussite wars. Rebuilt by Petr Vok from Rožmberk into a palatial Reneaisance castle after 1569. Sold due to debts. The last owners, the Paar's clan, built a park and took down the remainders of the previous keep. There are also outbuildings in the district, which are in reconstruction.
ExpositionsTHE CASTLE
The sightseeing tour of the castle interprets an unique paint and stuke decor. Especially captivating is the wedding hall of Peter Vok with rich paintings, armory with renaissance waffle ceiling, the cabinet and the bedroom of Petr Vok, the Tree hall, and others. The rooms are furnished with period mobiliar.
OTHER
In the former Gothic granary in the ward today is a museum of sculptor V. Preclík with the paintings of the Umělecká Beseda group. Exposition of the czech and world ceramics, which is presented by Aleš's southbohemian gallery, can be found in the former castle's brewery. Concert and theatre halls are in the former riding hall.
Interesting detailFrom the castle park tarrace can be very well seen an important technical monument, the Bechyně's bridge, with only one bridge arch, made of pre-stressed concrete. Constructor Ing. Stanislav Bechně (1887 - 1973).
